Advantages of Having a Pet

By Leslie Brown

Those who have pets know the advantages over the disadvantages. Sure, it takes time, effort, and costs money to maintain a healthy and loving pet. But having a pet gives us way more than just companionship. They give us benefits that are not necessarily available from our human companions, such as unconditional love and acceptance at all times.

Though there are some disadvantages to keeping a household pet, the therapeutic benefits and advantages outweigh its disadvantages.

Our pets are always there for us. A pet never judges us, and they continue to love us in spite of our flaws and errors. The bond that develops between a pet and its owner is unmatched compared to any other relationship.

Having a pet can give us a positive look on our life. They are not just there to stay with us; these living creatures comfort us in times when we need it.

If you come home from a tough day and have a pet to greet you, you probably already know the joys of pet ownership. They can reduce your stress, as the simple act of petting a dog, cat, or even a pet frog can lower heart rate and blood pressure. They can help us forget about feeling sick or being in pain.

We have pets to help us feel less lonely, to have something to talk to and think out loud, to have something to touch and to be touched, and to provide care. Our pets can be so sensitive to our feelings that they often know when we don’t feel well or are sad.

With those who buy exotic animals, such as a tarantuala, it is more about having an interest in a pet than in the love and affection. Owners cannot stroke it or snuggle up to it, but there is still the benefit of having a special being to call your own.

And different species play different roles. One role that birds and fish play is a focus of attention. Any time your mind can focus on something that's pleasant, without being overly stimulating, you feel better.

Pets encourage exercise—especially dogs. In fact, dog owners walk more often and longer than non-owners of the same age. And no one doubts the value of routine exercise.

Some studies also report that pet owners usually have a better physical and mental wellness than those who don’t. This generally applies to all generations. For the older population, sharing time with pets provides relief and comfort. For younger children, bonding with pets teaches the value of responsibility and caring.

Pets also help with social contact between people. Studies have shown that people with pets are actually viewed by others as being nicer, better people.

Pets seem to have a psychic ability that goes beyond our understanding. Some dogs can even tell when someone is about to have an epileptic seizure.

The medical community is realizing that pets can be beneficial in the healing process, and therefore they promote pet therapy in hospitals and in nursing homes. Even just looking at pictures of our pets can be calming. Watching a fish swim in an aquarium can be soothing. And, people often experience the same soothing benefits with pet birds.

In summary, having a pet can give us more advantages than disadvantages. We feel better, safer, more in touch, we feel not as lonely.
