Pet Goldfish: Didn’t Everyone Have One?
Like pet turtles, children often won a goldfish at a community fair or other neighborhood event. The goldfish came in the requisite plastic bag filled with water that kids then dumped into bowls when they got home.
A pet goldfish doesn’t require much attention and is good for young children. They are also fun to watch. Many people keep fish as pets for the relaxing feeling of watching them swim back and forth. Doctor offices often have an aquarium full of pet fish in order to relax and entertain patients in the waiting room.
The goldfish is considered to be the oldest domesticated fish. The popular image of a goldfish in a bowl has been depicted all over the world—from ancient pottery to modern comic strips. There are actually over 125 varieties of goldfish. They are available in many sizes, shapes, and colors. The “common goldfish” is the one you normally think of as a pet.
There are mainly two types of goldfish. They are the egg-shaped body goldfish and the flat body type. The flat body types are generally the hardiest, most competitive, and easiest to care for.
Goldfish don’t require as much care as other types of fish because they are quite hardy. For one thing, goldfish can live in colder water than other types of fish. They can do well in a small bowl with clean water, either alone or with another goldfish. They do not need an air filter or water heater in their tank, although they do need water that is not chlorinated.
Goldfish are an economical choice because they don’t cost as much as other pet fish. As long as their water is kept clean, a goldfish can live a long life. Given proper care and a good, healthy environment, they can live for nearly 50 years!
Goldfish should be kept in conditions that correspond to their natural habitat. An aquarium should allow enough room for the fish to swim freely. Ideally, the water in the aquarium should also be filtered.
You might want to add some color and entertainment in your goldfish bowl. In fact, goldfish seem to like a change of scenery. Goldfish decorations bought from a pet store include coral, bridges or castles, treasure chests, and plastic plants.
You can buy just about everything you need for your goldfish at a pet store. First, get a clear bowl or invest in an aquarium, and then get some gravel to put in the bottom of the bowl. The gravel can be as colorful as you like. A pet store will also have food for your pet goldfish. A goldfish eats anything, so provide it with a varied diet once a day. If you feed it more than this, it will contribute to poor water quality and overfeeding.
Like any fish, the common goldfish is a prey animal. It needs lots of hiding places to feel comfortable. They also like companionship. Because they are not an aggressive fish, goldfish can live in a fish bowl either alone or with another goldfish.
Give your goldfish enough space, clean, cool water, plenty of hiding places, and high-quality food, and it should be a good companion for a long time.
