Meet the Afghan Hound

By Leslie Brown, Chief Editor, JonesTV

The Afghan hound is an unusual and beautiful looking dog. When running free, the Afghan moves at a gallop, showing great elasticity and spring in his smooth, powerful stride. He can trot at a fast pace, moving with his head and tail high. The whole appearance of the Afghan hound is one of great style and beauty.

The hound’s coat is typical of animals found in high altitudes. Their coat, which is thick, silky, and fine, requires regular grooming, and their large size requires regular exercise. They can come in all colors, and while the breed is an excellent hound dog (hunting by sight), his popularity is primarily as a show dog. The head of the Afghan has long silky hair, which falls over his long face. His bangs typically fall away in front of the eyes so he has an absolutely clear outlook with no interference. The Afghan stands at about 25 to 27 inches, and weighs about 50 to 60 pounds. He has the appearance of what he is, a king of dogs.

Afghans are known for being aloof, dignified, and for having highly individualized personalities. They are, in general, delightful characters, and are lively, entertaining, and very loyal. Referred to as an aristocrat, these dogs crave constant love and attention from you and your family.

For the most part, Afghans are outgoing and friendly. They are usually intelligent and loving by nature, although they can also be shy and withdrawn. Some Afghan hounds are bright and can learn quickly, while others are more stubborn and obstinate and can be rather wild.

Although the Afghan hound is noted for his abilities as a sight hunter in mountainous terrains, the breed is rapidly gaining popularity as a house pet. Whatever your Afghan hound's attitude, your love, care and training can change him, turning the dog from an unruly, out-of-control dog, to the best in the block!
